Md. Military Medical Museum Marks 150th Year
SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) -- A military medical museum in Silver Spring is celebrating 150 years of collecting body parts.
The National Museum of Health and Medicine marks the anniversary Monday with a speech by the armed forces' chief medical examiner, Navy Capt. Craig Mallak.
The event also marks the museum's re-opening to the public. It moved last year from the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington to a new building at the Forest Glen Annex along the Capital Beltway.
Its collection includes hundreds of thousands of human brain specimens and the bullet that killed Abraham Lincoln. The museum's mission is to further the understanding of battlefield injuries.
A new Civil War exhibit features the right arm of Capt. Henry Wirtz, commander of the Confederate prisoner-of-war camp at Andersonville, Ga.
