Md. Man Gets 17 Years In Prison In Tax Scheme
GREENBELT, Md. (AP) -- A Maryland man has been sentenced to more than 17 years in prison for his part in a tax fraud scheme.
Irvin Hannis Catlett Jr., 64, of Crownsville was sentenced on Thursday. He will also have to pay $3.8 million in restitution.
Catlett was convicted by a jury in November. According to testimony during trial, the scheme Catlett was involved in prepared fraudulent tax returns for clients that included bogus business losses, reducing the amount clients had to pay in taxes. While in prison from November 2002 to September 2004 on other charges, Catlett instructed two others on how to prepare the false returns.
Approximately 275 fraudulent returns were filed, reporting $22 million in bogus losses.
