Md. Man Gets 2 Years In Special Olympics, NWF Mail Fraud Scheme
BALTIMORE (AP) -- A Frederick man has been sentenced to two years in prison for defrauding the Special Olympics, the National Wildlife Federation and other customers of his bulk mailing business.
Stephen Reid was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court in Baltimore.
He pleaded guilty in April to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud resulting in nearly $630,000 in losses to customers of RMS Direct Inc.
Reid also must make restitution to 19 defrauded customers.
Reid was the company's vice president. Former president and co-conspirator Chester Bigelow will be sentenced July 30.
Prosecutors say the National Wildlife Federation lost more than $78,000 in the scheme. The Special Olympics lost nearly $11,000.
Other defrauded charities include the American Health Assistance Foundation, the Arthritis Foundation and the American Institute for Cancer Research.
