Md. Man, 18, Gets 10 Years In Prison In Stabbing
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- An 18-year-old Hagerstown man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in the stabbing of a man with developmental disabilities last year.
A Washington County Circuit Court judge sentenced Matthew David Smith on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to first-degree assault.
Court records show that other charges against Smith, including attempted first-degree murder, were dropped as part of the plea agreement.
The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports the judge told Smith he will have to serve half of the sentence before he is eligible for parole.
According to charging documents, Smith stabbed Nelson Fuentes at his Marshall Street residence in December. Smith believed Fuentes might have been having a relationship with his girlfriend.
Assistant Public Defender Brian Hutchison told the judge that Fuentes was hospitalized for a day.
