Md. Lawmakers React To Firing of Former FBI Director James Comey
BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- Tension is high in Washington's halls of power amid the firestorm over President Donald Trump firing the FBI director and whether he compromised the investigation into Russia's meddling with the election.
WJZ's investigator Mike Hellgren spoke with Maryland lawmakers about Trump firing FBI Director James Comey.
"He now has the sole authority," says Maryland democratic senator Chris Van Hollen. "We are getting lots of phone calls and emails. People are very concerned about the integrity of the justice system."
"Let's move on and stop at the partisan rhetoric. Let's stop making a partisan issue out of everything that goes on every single day in the Trump Administration," says Maryland Republican congressman Andy Harris.
Harris believes talk of corruption in the Trump Administration is nonsense.
"I think to some extent, it is media driven and partisan driven, to be honest," Harris says.
Whatever side you are on, the controversy that is the talk of the town in Washington does not seem to be blowing over anytime soon.
"This is an unprecedented kind of action where you have the president of the United States firing the director of the FBI when there is an ongoing investigation," Van Hollen says.
"The outrage, again, are from people not having accepted the result of November 8. Let's get on with moving the country forward the way the president said he would," Harris says.
Maryland's Attorney General Brian Frosh joins several others and calls for an independent counsel to investigate Russia.
Harris says Frosh needs to stick to business.
Democrats continue to call for Rod Rosenstein to set up a special prosecutor to take over the Russian investigation. They say the Trump Administration cannot be trusted to lead the investigation into itself.
