Md. Labor Dept. Gears Up For Federal Shutdown
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland's labor secretary says his department is preparing for an increased workload if there are more unemployment compensation claims in a federal government shutdown.
Alexander Sanchez, secretary of the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, said Thursday that the department administers the Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees program. That program provides benefits for unemployed former civilian federal employees.
If there is a shutdown, the department will extend hours and add staff to deal with an expected increase in workload.
Sanchez reminds residents that they must apply for benefits where they work, not where they live. Maryland residents who work in Washington must apply in D.C.
However, Sanchez says his staff will help Maryland residents navigate D.C.'s website and answer their questions.
