Md. Hosts Multistate Meeting On Incarcerated Vets
PERRYVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Maryland's prison agency is playing host to a multistate conference in Perryville on incarcerated military veterans.
The event Tuesday at the Perry Point Veterans Affairs Medical Center features state Public Safety and Correctional Services Secretary Gary Maynard and Maryland Veterans Affairs Secretary Edward Chow.
The conference is a function of the Middle Atlantic States Correctional Association.
In 2002, the Department of Justice reported that veterans accounted for roughly 10 percent of the nation's jail and prison population. Those are the most recent numbers available.
The conference topics include veterans' courts, re-entry services for veterans, suicide prevention and homelessness.
