Md. Group To Build Coretta Scott King Memorial
EDGEWATER, Md. (AP) -- Organizers a breaking ground on a new memorial garden honoring Coretta Scott King in Maryland for her legacy as a human rights advocate.
Organizers say it will be one of the nation's first memorials honoring the widow of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
At a ceremonial groundbreaking Sunday, dozens gathered to see the first progress on the memorial in Anne Arundel County. It's scheduled for completion this spring.
Carl Snowden, who is leading the effort and is director of the state attorney general's civil rights office, says Coretta Scott King deserves her own memorial.
The memorial at Sojourner-Douglass College will have a fountain in the center with plaques bearing six sayings by Coretta Scott King. Many flowers in the garden will be pink and red, her favorite colors.
