Md. GOP Pushes 'March Tax Madness' Bracket
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland Republican Party is hoping to capitalize on college hoops' "March Madness" with a tourney bracket of its own laying out eight tax hikes being considered by state lawmakers.
In the abbreviated tournament, the party pits eight tax proposals -- including possible levies on cigarettes and gas --against each other and solicits votes to determine which tax will most likely prevail.
The bracket was emailed to supporters Thursday as part of a fundraising appeal at the start of the NCAA college basketball tournament.
While state Republican float eight tax hikes as possibilities, top lawmakers in the State House have been leaning toward approving only one -- an increase in the alcohol tax -- if they approve any at all.
