Md. Deer Harvest Down 2 Percent; Bad Weather Cited
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Maryland wildlife managers are reporting a slight decline in the deer harvest.
The Department of Natural Resources said Monday that the number of deer taken by all hunters combined in the 2010-11 season was down 2 percent from a year earlier.
The total of 98,663 includes deer taken with bows and arrows, muzzleloaders and modern firearms.
Deer Project Leader Brian Eyler says strong winds and cold temperatures on some of the most popular days made hunting more challenging.
And Eyler says an abundant acorn crop provided lots of food for deer. He says that changed their movement patterns and left some hunters wondering where deer were.
