Md. Covered Bridge To Undergo $2M Overhaul
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Officials say a covered bridge that dates back to the Civil War will undergo nearly $2 million in repairs next year.
The Baltimore Sun reports that the 90-foot-long Jericho Road bridge, which crosses Little Gunpowder Falls between Baltimore and Harford counties, still handles nearly 500 vehicles a day.
Officials say the bridge is safe but is showing its age with deteriorating timbers, a leaking roof and in need of a fresh coat of paint.
Motorists will have to make a detour of about a mile and a half to another crossing on Jerusalem Road when the bridge is being repaired.
Most of the money for the overhaul is coming from the federal highway administration and $80,000 in additional funds is coming from the two counties that together own the bridge.
