Washington County Jail Changing Procedures After Hanging
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The Washington County sheriff says he has ordered changes in jail procedures after an inmate apparently hanged himself in his cell.
Sheriff Douglas Mullendore said Tuesday that inmates no longer will be able to stay in their cells during meals at the jail near Hagerstown.
The change follows the apparent suicide Monday of Brayan Mora-Castro. The sheriff's office says he was found hanging by a bed sheet from a sprinkler head in his cell.
Mullendore says Mora-Castro, 22, was left alone for about 30 minutes because he chose to stay in his cell when other inmates went to dinner.
Mora-Castro was awaiting trial on charges of false imprisonment and second-degree assault.
He was also being held on a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer.
