Washington Co. Drops FedEx Senior Meal Delivery
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The Washington County Commission on Aging says prepackaged meals delivered by FedEx just don't measure up to hot food from Meals on Wheels.
The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown newspaper reported Tuesday that the agency is resuming volunteer deliveries to homebound seniors after trying the FedEx program for nearly eight months.
FedEx delivers boxes once a week from Mom's Meals, a business based in Ankeny, Ohio. The company says it provides the service in more than 30 states.
The commission tried it to cut costs. But Executive Director Susan MacDonald says recipients prefer fresh, hot meals prepared in public school kitchens.
The boxes delivered by FedEx contain up to 21 meals packed in ice. The contents can include bread, peanut butter packets, powdered milk, pancakes, roast beef and mashed potatoes.
