Md. Casino Wants Dealer School Lawsuit Dismissed
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Lawyers for Maryland Live! Casino are asking a judge to dismiss a class-action lawsuit accusing its operators of using a dealer school as a prop for job training to avoid paying the minimum wage.
In a motion to dismiss obtained by The Daily Record, the Hanover casino's attorneys argue that the people who attended a three-month training program were not employees and the casino didn't gain any immediate benefit from their work.
The class-action lawsuit was filed last month in Baltimore by three people who underwent months of training to become dealers at the casino last year.
The lawsuit accuses Maryland Live! of disguising job training as a school in partnership with Anne Arundel County Community College, and telling potential dealers they were fortunate the training courses were free.
