Mayor Rawlings-Blake Bets Boston Mayor That Ravens Will Win the AFC Championship Game
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake agreed to a friendly wager with Boston Mayor Thomas Menino over the outcome of Sunday's AFC Championship rematch between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots.
Mayor Menino and Mayor Rawlings-Blake placed the wager during a phone call Wednesday afternoon.
"On Sunday the Baltimore Ravens, led by Coach John Harbaugh, quarterback Joe Flacco and All-Pro linebacker Ray Lewis will bring their potent offence and crushing defense to Foxboro, and soundly defeat the New England Patriots," said Mayor Rawlings-Blake. "Under the leadership of Coach Harbaugh, the Baltimore Ravens have become stronger, smarter, and more fundamentally sound every year. The New England Patriots can be assured that the AFC Championship will be a most uncomfortable home game and a defeat they will not soon forget."
In accordance with the terms of the wager, the mayor of the losing team must send the other mayor food that is unique to their city.
Mayor Rawlings-Blake agreed to send an array of fine foods that are available at Baltimore's historic public markets. The centerpiece of the meal will be broiled crab cakes from J. W. Faidley Seafood in Baltimore's historic Lexington Market. Legendary New York Times food critic R.W. Apple once called Faidley's crab cakes "the single best crab cake in Baltimore, if not the Western Hemisphere."
Additionally, the mayor will send stuffed cabbage and kruschiki from Sophie's Place, which is located in the newly renovated Broadway Market in Fells Point; a gourmet fruit salad from Kay's Produce, one of the many great small businesses located in the Historic Lexington Market; and last, but not least, an order of Baltimore's signature sweet, Berger Cookies.
Mayor Menino agreed to also send a variety of unique foods available in Boston's Farmers' markets. The centerpiece will be some seafood from Red's Best Seafood. Side dishes will be come from CropCircle Kitchen, Alex's Ugly Hot Sauce, Deborah's Kitchen Jams, Nella Pasta, Vianne Chocolate, and Whoopie Monsters' Whoopie Pies.
