Joe Torre, Chief Baseball Officer for Major League Baseball, made the announcement on Monday.
The tension between the Orioles' Machado and the Red Sox, has been going since the beginning of the series between the two teams Friday, when Machado injured Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia with a spikes-high slide.
Machado reportedly apologized to Pedroia via text following the game.
The MLB says the suspension had been scheduled to begin Tuesday, when the Red Sox are to host the New York Yankees at Fenway Park.
However, the MLB says Barnes has elected to appeal and any disciplinary action will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.
