'Match Day' Brings Excitement To Medical Students
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- It's Match Day, the day fourth-year medical students across the country learn where they will begin their careers as doctors.
Jessica Kartalija reports students rank their top three choices and are matched with hospitals throughout the United States.
On this St. Patrick's Day a pot of gold cards revealed the future for medical students at Johns Hopkins.
"Students found out today where they will be for the next three to 10 years, and I think you can tell by their reaction today, they are incredibly happy," said Thomas Koenig, Associate Dean, Johns Hopkins University School Of Medicine.
"I am staying here next year at Johns Hopkins for my intern year, then I am going to Harvard for ophthalmology," said Ashley Campbell.
Her parents couldn't be more proud she has a job.
"I am ecstatic, I am joyous. She deserves everything she gets," said Regina Campbell.
Ninety-seven students matched Thursday at Johns Hopkins. More than a third of them will stay at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
"I matched here at Johns Hopkins Hospital and I am going into orthopedic surgery. They have an incredible department. It was my number one choice," said Sophie Strike.
"New York, it's not my first choice, but I'll take it," said Lorenza Frisoni who is heading to Columbia University Medical Center.
"I am going to Thomas Jefferson in Philadelphia for OB. My fiancé is there, so we can live together now. We will be in the same place. It's exciting," said Rupsa Chaudhury.
At the University of Maryland, students were called one by one, learning which hospital they have been accepted to for their residency.
There were 153 students from the University of Maryland who learned where they were matched Thursday; 43 will stay in Maryland.
