Massive Marina Fire Cause Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars in Damage
BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- An overnight raging inferno broke out at the Otter Creek Marina in Abingdon, Harford County.
A sea of fiery orange and red ignited the sky early Tuesday morning.
The raging inferno tore through several boats and a small building at the marina.
At least five boats were completely destroyed in the fire and the damage cost is in six figures.
WJZ obtained video showing firefighters from the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Company working to combat the blaze that burned for 45 minutes.
Roger Ashley runs his business out of the marina.
"I was extremely upset coming down the road knowing that my shop was involved," he said. "It could have been a lot worse and you know it's one of these things that happened, nobody wanted it to happen," Rogers said.
For one owner it's really more than just about the boat. He says it's really more like losing a member of the family.
"I ask him 'How bad?' and he said 'There's nothing left' my heart just dropped," Gary Rider said. "I just broke down."
Considering what could have been, this community is not only thankful to firefighters but also a 4-legged pup named, Kai.
His owner said it was Kai's booming barks that alerted her to the fire which led to the 911 call.
"He's a hero. I mean honestly 15 more minutes if we wouldn't have gotten up I don't know what would have happened," said Kai's owner.
No one was hurt. It took about 30 firefighters to put out the fire.
Insurance companies have been out to the scene to help those owners who lost their boats.
An investigation has been launched into what sparked the blaze.
