Mass Shooting Leaves Seven People Injured In East Baltimore
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore police are investigating a mass shooting that injured seven people, including a 16-year-old.
It happened Sunday afternoon at the corner of North Montford Avenue and East Preston Street. The Commissioner said all seven victims have non-life-threatening injuries.
"This is a very heinous act," Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said. "A very cowardly act. Very brazen act in broad daylight. Not to mention, on a holiday weekend when people are supposed to be enjoying themselves."
Police said a ShotSpotter alerted them of the shooting around 3:30 p.m.
Officers said they found four victims on the street, two others had already gone to the hospital before they arrived. A seventh victim, a 16-year-old, was found a short distance away.
"The whole block's blocked off," Ronald Perry, who lives in the area, said. "It's ridiculous. It's sad."
On the scene, there was what appeared to be a car crashed into an Amazon delivery van. Police do not know if this is connected to the shooting.
Evidence markers also lined the street.
Police say at least one person opened fire.
"It appears that there may be more than one caliber round, which means more than one gun and what we don't know is if someone was firing back (or) if there was multiple shooters," the Commissioner said.
Community members, stunned by the violence, are calling on city leaders to make it stop.
"It's about coming in the neighborhoods, making sure that youth, or even adults, know that they have a choice," Perry said. "They have somewhere to go. They have people that care."
The Commissioner said there were a lot of people around when the shooting happened.
He needs their help to catch whoever is responsible.
"We're pleading and pleading and pleading to get people to come forward to help us because this did not have to happen," the Commissioner said. "Just imagine if it were you or if it were your children or your family. You would want someone to do the very same thing for you."
If you know anything about this shooting, you're asked to call police or Metro Crimestoppers.
