Maryland's O'Donnell Wins Honda For Field Hockey
NEW YORK (AP) -- Katie O'Donnell of Maryland has won the Honda Sports Award as the top female in field hockey.
The senior from Blue Bell, Pa., led her team to the NCAA Division I Championships this season. She made a steal and assist in the second period of sudden-death overtime to give No. 1 Maryland a 3-2 victory over No. 2 North Carolina last month.
O'Donnell led the nation in points (99) and assists (34), making her the first player in NCAA history to have 100 career assists and 300 career points.
The other finalists were Connecticut's Melissa Gonzalez, Virginia's Paige Selenski and Princeton's Kathleen Sharkey.
O'Donnell will compete with winners in 11 other sports for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year award to be handed out June 27 in New York.
