Marylanders, Including One Ravens Player, Helping Devastated Haiti
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- It's been three weeks since Hurricane Matthew devastated Haiti. Thousands in the Caribbean island nation are still in desperate need of help.
As Ron Matz reports, some aid is coming from people in Maryland, including a member of the Baltimore Ravens.
The 140 mph winds caused catastrophic devastation, and the storm's effects are still in plain sight there. Christiane Short was there for five days with the Life Connection Mission in Germantown.
"We feel really helpless here, stuck back here in the United States watching TV and waiting for emails... When you already have a little and something comes along and takes that little, it takes a lot of your hope away."
The mission is delivering supplies to Haitians, where toiletries are among the things that are desperately needed. They're being collected at the St. Patrick's School in Rockville, where Short is the principal.
"The need is overwhelming," says missionary Dale Moyer. "Even with relief going in from different government agencies, it's not going to be enough. IT's just going to help some people."
The Ravens' Elvis Dumervil, whose parents are from Haiti, is also helping the cause.
Pictures from his Twitter page show him there, helping to build 58 homes -- the same number as he wears on his jersey.
Missionaries say recovery will take years.
