Maryland Zoo To Hold Popular 'Sex At The Zoo' Valentine's Day Event
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Love is wild, and it's no different for animals at the Maryland Zoo.
Andrea Fujii tells us that's why they're holding an adults-only event right in time for Valentine's Day.
Extended quills on a male porcupine is a sign it's ready to mate. That's just one lesson folks who attend the Maryland Zoo's "Sex at the Zoo" event will learn.
"It's a really sort of interesting lecture about sort of the wild side of things at the zoo and how the animals go about breeding and reproducing," said Mike McClure, Maryland Zoo.
And where better to learn about the birds and the bees than at the zoo, where they house more than 200 species, including the Panamanian golden frogs that take a friendly approach to breeding?
"The males actually do a wave, and they'll take their front leg and just keep doing this to sort of invite females," McClure said.
This is the third year for the event, and even at $130 per couple it's already sold out.
Zoo veterinarians say it's a night of laughs, but it's all useful information.
"We do actually make it kind of light-hearted, but at the same time we drive home a lot of really important educational messages about the animals," McClure said.
Again, the zoo's adult event on Thursday is sold out. But there is another Valentine's Day event, and this one is kid friendly. It's on Saturday called "Valentine's Enrichment Day."
