Maryland Would Play Major Role In Washington 2024 Olympics Bid
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A new push to bring the summer Olympics to the Washington, D.C.-Baltimore region is moving forward. The region is one of four U.S. cities being considered by the Olympic Committee.
Meghan McCorkell has more on what that could mean for Maryland.
With several sporting venues already here, transportation, security and thousands of hotel rooms, some say our region is a serious contender for the 2024 games.
The bid is called "Washington 2024," but Maryland would play a major role.
"We've announced that we're going to bring the 2024 Olympics to the Washington area," said Russ Ramsey, Washington 2024.
"It would be hundreds of thousands of people coming into the state of Maryland," said Terry Hasseltine, executive director of Maryland Sports.
Hasseltine says the state plays a critical part in getting the games.
"We have some of the best infrastructure assets when it comes to already venues that are on the books that they have to assess and evaluate," said Hasseltine.
Maryland venues that could be part of the plans include Camden Yards, M&T Bank Stadium and the University of Maryland. Sailing competitions may take place in Annapolis. A whitewater course in Garrett County is already hosting an international canoe and kayak competition.
"We're doing stuff in Maryland already that is significant to the Olympic effort," Hasseltine said.
Washington 2024 has launched a new website and announced a board that includes Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank.
They've also gained Governor O'Malley's support, who says: "Hosting the Olympics will foster a lasting sports, tourism and cultural legacy for our nation while also highlighting Maryland and the capital strength, diversity and vibrancy on the ultimate global stage."
Our region is competing with Boston, New York and San Francisco to become the U.S. choice for the games. The winner will then compete with other cities all over the globe.
The national committee is expected to pick a U.S. city by early 2015.
The D.C.-Baltimore region also made a bid to host the 2012 Summer Games, which were ultimately awarded to London.
