Maryland Weather: Severe Storms Bring Flash Flooding To Parts Of Baltimore; Multiple Water Rescues Made

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Severe thunderstorms moved through parts of Maryland Friday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and flash flooding.

WJZ Investigator Mike Hellgren captured video of flash flooding in the Fells Point neighborhood of Baltimore around 7 p.m.

This video was taken on South Wolfe Street. Cars could be seen navigating through high waters.

"It was wipers on high, and people were pulling over, and it was pretty bad," said Baltimore resident Beth Englehart said.

On Monument and Pulaski Highway in east Baltimore, drivers suddenly found themselves trapped in high water.

Baltimore City Police and Fire units shut down the area and blocked off traffic to rescue cars trapped under the bridge before tow trucks were called in.

The National Weather Service of Baltimore/Washington said that there were reports of multiple water rescues in east Baltimore.

Besides the heavy rain, Friday's storms brought strong winds, both forcing some people to change their plans.

"I wanted to be able to sit outside and have a socially distance dinner with a friend but we weren't able to do that because of the rain," said Fells Point resident Jade Baker.

But as quickly as the rain came, it went, and a rainbow emerged to end the day.

It marked the third straight night that the region had seen severe weather.

An MTA Bus got caught in floodwaters in northeast Baltimore Wednesday evening, police said. Officials responded to the scene to get passengers off the bus. Everyone made it off safely.

Severe storms also rolled through the region Thursday, causing flooding in Washington D.C. and lightning across the skies of Baltimore.

Officials want to remind residents "turn around, don't drown" amid summer storms that cause flash flooding.
