Maryland Weather: Frosty to summer temps by late week
BALTIMORE -- Expect calm weather through mid-week with high pressure in control both at the surface and aloft. Temps tonight will be chilly but not as cold as last night with widespread 40s across the area. Some of the colder spots will drop into the upper 30s but the frost risk tonight is much lower.
On Wednesday, the high-pressure center will move offshore, bringing in a southerly flow and a gradual warming trend. Wednesday's forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with highs in the mid to upper 70s.
Wednesday night will remain mostly clear with lows ranging from the upper 40s to mid- 50s.
Thursday will continue the warming trend, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid-70s to around 80 degrees. Thursday night will be warmer, with lows generally in the 50s.
Looking ahead from Friday through this weekend, unusually strong high pressure aloft for this time of year is expected to dominate the weather pattern. The upper-level ridge will extend from the eastern Gulf of Mexico into the Carolinas and the southern Mid-Atlantic region, bringing continued warm and mostly dry conditions.
The pattern may start to shift later in the weekend into Monday as an upper-level trough from Canada moves southeastward, bringing with it low pressure and a cold front.
However, due to the strength of the upper-level ridge, this process is expected to be slow, with the front likely stalling to the north of the region through Monday. Only a slight chance of a few showers is forecast, mainly across the northern areas early next week as the front moves southward.
Temperatures during this period are expected to remain well above average, with afternoon highs averaging in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees along the coast and 80-85 degrees inland. A few record highs could be challenged.
Overnight lows will stay mild, in the 50s to low 60s, through Monday morning. While the timing of the cold front next week remains uncertain, a significant temperature drop is possible, with highs trending below normal for early November into the mid-50s with lows well into the 30s. The cold front is slated to move through the Baltimore Area on Halloween, leading to potentially colder weather for trick-or-treaters Tuesday night.
If you didn't get frost Monday night, you'll see it by the middle to end of next week.
