Maryland Tops Millionaire Rankings; Hawaii Second
HONOLULU (AP) -- Maryland has a slightly higher percentage of millionaire households than Hawaii.
That's according to a New York company that studies affluent households.
Phoenix Marketing International released its annual ranking of millionaires per capita by state Thursday, with Maryland supplanting Hawaii by a fraction. Hawaii had led the rankings since 2008.
Approximately 7.22 percent of Maryland's households are millionaires, compared to 7.21 percent in Hawaii.
Phoenix Global Wealth Monitor Executive Director David Thompson says this is the closest it's ever been between the top two states.
He says all the top 10 states increased millionaire ratios during the past year, underscoring that the rich keep getting richer.
Phoenix estimates that the number of millionaires in the country grew by 6.9 percent from the previous year, numbering some 5.9 million households.
