Maryland State Trooper Shoots DUI Suspect While Dragged By Fleeing Car
SALISBURY, Md. (WJZ)—A Maryland state trooper shoots a DUI suspect after he was dragged down the road in Salisbury.
Around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, Tfc. Richard Keidel was patrolling on Johnson Road near Nevins Place in Wicomico County, when he saw a car that was speeding and had a tag light out. As he moved behind the vehicle, the trooper saw the Honda passenger car swerve and almost hit a telephone pole.
Keidel pulled over 23-year-old Harry Wyatt-Swift. He then smelled alcohol and began a DUI investigation.
When asked to perform a field sobriety test, Wyatt-Swift ran back to his car.
And when the trooper tried to take his keys, he drove off with the trooper hanging out of the driver's side window.
The trooper shot Wyatt-Swift twice. He is being treated at Shock Trauma, where he is under state police guard. Charges against him are pending and are expected to be filed later Tuesday.
Keidel, a five-year veteran of Maryland State Police, is assigned to road patrol duties at the Salisbury Barrack. He was not seriously injured.
