Maryland State Sen. Andrew Serafini Resigns From Office
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- State Senator Andrew Serafini is resigning effective August 1, the state's Senate Republican Caucus announced Thursday.
Serafini, 58, took office in 2015, representing District 2 in Washington County. Prior to that, he served in the House of Delegates from 2008 to 2015.
In a letter to Gov. Larry Hogan, Serafini wrote that "after much prayer and contemplation, it has become clear to me that it is time to resign from the Senate of Maryland." He also thanked Hogan for his "service, leadership and wisdom in guiding our State through such trying and challenging times."
Serafini also wrote a letter to his fellow senators in which he said he did not anticipate spending the past 12 years in Annapolis, adding being away from his family for five days a week had worn on him.
He also thanked the senators for their friendship and "patience for my too frequent and longwinded speeches from the floor."
Senate Minority Whip Steve Hershey said in a statement Serafini is returning home "to focus on his family and business full-time."
"Andy is beloved by our members and staff, and his thoughtfulness and kindness will be missed," Hershey said.
Within the next 30 days, the Republican Central Committee will recommend a replacement for Serafini. It will be up to the governor to make the final appointment.
