Maryland State Fair Begins With New Funnel Cake & Attractions
TIMONIUM, Md. (WJZ)—The Maryland State Fair -- also called the 11 best days of summer – has started. More than half-a-million people visit every year.
Gigi Barnett explains the fair has some new attractions this year.
This is a summer staple. The Maryland State Fair is underway.
And some rush to get tickets early on day one.
"First thing in the morning, no lines. The kids can go on as many rides as they want. They don't have to wait," said Misse Talmage, state fair visitor.
Everyone has a favorite ride.
"Ferris wheel," one visitor said.
There are games and entertainment
"I love seeing the animals," a visitor said.
And don't forget the fair food like funnel cakes.
That's one of the new foods featured this year. Vendors are frying up red velvet funnel cakes complete with cream cheese icing.
"I think it's going to do pretty good cause it's something new," said Margret Becker, Deggeller Attractions.
While some attractions are new, others will always stay the same, like the animals, which have been at the center of the Maryland State Fair since the beginning.
"The fair is really about young people and 4H and the opportunity for them to do the things they do here. I just think it's fantastic," said Grove Miller, Chairman of the Maryland State Fair.
The Maryland State Fair started as a one-day picnic in 1878. Then over the years it grew into 10 days. Then back in 1999, organizers had too many events and attractions so they added a day--making the fair the 11 best days of summer.
The Maryland State Fair ends on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3.
