Maryland Pays Tribute To Its Fallen Heroes
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Maryland pays tribute to its fallen heroes. Three firefighters and three police officers have died in the line of duty since the ceremony last year.
Pat Warren reports on Friday's gathering.
The pipes, the bikes, the mounted patrols and every other aspect of public safety are represented here.
Baltimore firefighter James Bethea died of smoke inhalation after falling through a floor in a vacant rowhouse in November. His son and grandson were there.
"He gave his life caring for the people of that city--of Baltimore City--and never forget that," said Darryl Bethea, firefighter's son.
"The service today was a wonderful time to remember those who have given their lives, including my father," said Casey Harmon, firefighter's daughter.
Baltimore County fire apparatus driver Robert Fogle died last May during a training exercise.
"And I am just forever grateful that he made that ultimate sacrifice," said Harmon.
Baltimore City officer Craig Chandler died after a crash during a pursuit in November.
Paramedic Erik Staciak of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company was hit and killed by a car while on duty.
Prince George's County officer Brennan Rabain and Charles County sheriff corporal Jamel Clagett also killed on duty.
This is the 30th anniversary of Fallen Heroes Day.
The ceremony usually takes place in May, but was postponed this year due to the unrest in Baltimore City.
