Maryland Family Loses Son In Hit-And-Run Accident
BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) -- A Baltimore County family is heartbroken after their son, a student at the University of Miami, was killed by a hit and run driver. Police say a Miami area model was the one behind the wheel. Kai Jackson reports his family just wants answers.
Police in Miami say they're closing in on a suspect in the death of Paul Jones, while the family of the Maryland native struggles with his loss.
Jared "Paul" Jones died on Tuesday after being in a coma for a week. Jones was 21, a Maryland native and student at the University of Miami. He was the victim of a hit and run in Coral Gables as he crossed the street.
Jones had severe head trauma after he was hit. Initially, it was unclear who hit him. Immediately after the accident, Jones' parents rushed to his side. They kept vigil and appealed to the public for help.
Authorities say 45-year-old Valentina Andrews Hubsch, a local model, has given a statement to investigators.
"Mrs. Hubsch--through her attorney, Albert Levin--has cooperated with us," said Coral Gables Police Department Major Scott Masington.
Hubsch's attorney issued a statement, saying, "I am confident that when the facts are dissected by the state's attorney's office and the test results come back, they will find she did not cause this accident."
Paul Jones' family hasn't talked about culpability in the accident, but his mother asked a simpler question.
"You know, I think the question always, the first thing of course that always pops into your mind is, why didn't this person stop? Why didn't they stop and help instead of driving away?" said Betsy Jones, Paul Jones' mother.
The suspect's vehicle is still being processed by police for DNA and other evidence.
