Maryland Eastern Shore Tops Delaware State 58-53
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (AP) -- Kevin Mays had 17 points and seven rebounds to lead Maryland Eastern Shore to its first victory of the season, 58-53 over Delaware State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game on Saturday.
Francis Ezeiru, Troy Snyder and Ishaq Pitt had 10 points each for the Hawks (1-13, 1-2). Ezeiru also contributed nine rebounds.
Marques Oliver had 15 points and six rebounds for Delaware State (6-10, 1-1). He made nine of 10 from the line.
The Hawks outshot the Hornets from the field 43.3 percent (13 of 30) to 32.7 percent (16 of 49) and won the rebound battle 32-24. They made 30 free throws to 15 for Delaware State.
UMES led 25-18 at halftime and pushed the advantage to 39-24 on Donald Williams II's dunk with 15:19 remaining.
Delaware State, whose only league victory came against UMES, chipped away, but the final score was as close as it got.
