Maryland Commission Rules Uber Must Be Regulated
BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Maryland body that oversees transit ruled that a popular web-based ride sharing service is subject to state regulation.
The Maryland Public Service Commission on Wednesday ruled that Uber Technologies Inc. must be regulated. Uber is a ride sharing company that connects drivers with passengers using a smart phone application.
The PSC ruled that Uber is a common carrier -- a company that moves people or goods for hire.
Uber has argued that it should not be subject to regulation under the PSC because of it is a technology company, and because it does not own or operate the cars in its ride sharing program.
The order requires Uber to apply for a motor carrier permit within 60 days, and calls for the commission staff to begin drafting new guidelines.
