Maryland Cleans Up After Powerful Storms
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The cleanup is just beginning around the area from a weekend of destructive weather. Heavy rains, strong thunderstorms and even a lightning strike left behind a lot of damage.
Monique Griego reports from downed power lines to fallen tree limbs, this round of storms was not only dangerous and destructive but also deadly.
The storms that began Thursday continued through the weekend, leaving behind one big mess.
Broken limbs and downed trees damaged several cars around the area.
"Just when I got there, I heard this cracking and this boom. I thought the world was coming to an end. So anyway, when we looked out, everybody came out, that tree had fallen," said Viola Bee, Northwest Baltimore.
In Prince George's County, the storms claimed a life.
A 19-year-old was killed Saturday when a tree fell onto power lines, both electrifying and crushing him with the debris.
"A freak accident," said one person.
BGE crews have been working non-stop since Friday, restoring power to some 100,000 homes. Most are back online, but not all. The utility was reporting on its website that as of 7 a.m. Monday, about 815 customers lacked power in Baltimore City. About another 260 were without power in Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties.
BGE says it expects to restore service to the vast majority of customers affected by the storms by early afternoon.
Besides the electric outages, a handful of homes in Dundalk are without gas service all because of heavy flooding.
The same wet weather that hit us, also hit Pennsylvania, causing a river to flood and killing an elderly woman.
