Director of Baltimore City Department of Transportation resigns from position

BALTIMORE -- Baltimore City Department of Transportation (DOT) Director Corren Johnson is stepping down effective immediately, Mayor Brandon Scott announced Thursday afternoon.  

Johnson was appointed as the department's second female director by Mayor Scott in 2023. She served as interim director for eight months before she was sworn in.  

Johnson also worked as the DOT's chief engineer and deputy director for Complete Streets. She also worked for the Maryland State Highway Administration for 17 years where she served as the first Black female District Engineer for Maryland. 

Mayor Scott thanked Johnson for her dedication and shared that she recruited and onboarded more than 20 new traffic enforcement officers during her time at the DOT.  

Johnson also led the city's pursuit of federal resources through grant programs and worked to modernize traffic signals throughout the city, the mayor said.  

Mayor Scott said Veobia Akilo, the current Chief Administrative Officer at DOT, will now serve as the interim director.  

"I am confident that Interim Director Akilo will continue to advance our shared vision for improving the delivery of City services and building a more efficient, equitable Baltimore," Mayor Scott said.
