Baltimore Father Of 2 Stabbed To Death While Trying To Break Up A Fight
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A good Samaritan was stabbed to death as he tried to break up a fight between high school students. Now his heartbroken family is speaking out.
Rochelle Ritchie has more on their plea for help in finding his killer.
A man trying to stop kids from pounding on each other became a victim himself. No suspects have been named.
Emotional family members of Durrell Gaskins, 25, spoke to WJZ about the tragic death of the father of two.
"It's hurts the most because I was right here with him," said Jasmine Ward, niece.
Gaskins' niece says her uncle was getting ready to leave for work Wednesday afternoon when he heard a violent commotion outside. That's when she says her uncle ran out to stop the fight.
"Somebody else jumped in and hit him. They was fighting. Turned back around, he got stabbed. Had him in my arms and he started getting light headed," Ward said while choking back tears.
Baltimore City Police say in the chaos, Gaskins was stabbed.
His father ran down the street to his son, whose last words are devastating to any parent.
"I actually held my son in my hands, and the last thing he told me is 'Daddy, I love you. I'm not going to make it,'" said Durant Gaskins, victim's father.
The killing happened just a few blocks from Forest Park High School.
Police have not said if the assailants are students at Forest Park High School, although witnesses say the attackers did have on the school's uniform.
"How did he get in school and out the school with this knife, and they have metal detectors? I don't get that," said Tijuana Clayton, victim's aunt.
This is the eighth killing in the Northwestern district since late September.
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake says the city must do all it can to change the mentality of its youngest citizens.
"We have to find a way to break through and give our young people other options other than violence that is destroying lives," the mayor said.
Gaskins' father says his son was one of the good guys and didn't deserve death for doing what was right.
"One of you guys out there know who killed my son. You know who killed my son," he said.
No suspects have been named in this stabbing.
A second stabbing victim was treated and released from the hospital.
