Man Shot, Killed By Officer On Roadside
PALMER PARK, Md. (AP) -- Prince George's County police say an officer shot and killed a Landover man who pointed a gun at the officer.
Police spokesman Cpl. Henry Tippett says Rodney Edwards, 35, was lying in a grassy area on the side of Greenleaf Road in the Palmer Park area when an officer arrived to check on him. Police say Edwards pointed a gun at the officer, who drew his service weapon and fired. Edwards was taken to a hospital, where he died.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave. Police say they don't know why Edwards was lying next to the road or why he pulled the gun.
Tippett says the shooting is the 15th involving county officers in 2011.
