Man Nearly Killed When 2 Speeding Cars Come Racing His Way
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Police follow two cars racing down North Avenue and an innocent bystander is tragically hit.
Christie Ileto has more on the dangerous collision that almost took a Baltimore man's life.
While Chris Richardson describes the accident as agonizing and while he lives to tell the tale, his family says this accident should have never happened.
What Chris Richardson says should have been a quick stop at the store Wednesday night, turned into a near-death experience.
"It happened so fast, I just really didn't have time to think," Richardson said.
Police say one of two cars speeding west on North Avenue near Rosedale plowed into a pair of parked cars before jumping the curb and hitting Richardson.
"The officer began to follow these vehicles in an attempt to investigate why these vehicles were traveling so fast," said Det. Jeremy Silbert.
"When I come out the convenient store, I hear this siren, but I don't know where it's coming from. When I step out, I see a police chasing a car," said Richardson.
Baltimore City Police insist the officer did not chase the drivers, but suspect the drivers were racing.
Richardson says he was standing when he was hit by one of the speeding cars. He says somehow because of the impact, he landed on the other side of the road. A tie marks the spot where he landed.
"All I remember is trying to turn away from the car, and it hit me. Next thing I knew I was just laying in a puddle of blood," he said.
Some of his injuries are too graphic to show, but Richardson has 50 stitches in his head and an ear pieced back together.
Police caught up with the drivers, but say no citations have been issued while they investigate. That's little comfort for the family.
"They didn't get no tickets or anything. I mean, come on. Where's the justice at?" said Sheri Richardson, victim's wife.
Richardson's family is happy he survived, but tell WJZ they question whether police really followed their no chase policy.
Richardson says he has a long road to recovery and is hoping that ear that fell apart in three places will heal fully.
Police haven't cited the drivers, but they could face charges of reckless endangerment and striking a pedestrian.
