Man Killed, 4 Injured In Wrong-Way Crash On I-81
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Maryland state police say a West Virginia man was killed and four others were injured after he drove the wrong way on Interstate 81 with two young children in his van.
Police say 56-year-old Ronald Payne of Hedgesville, W.Va., was killed after his van collided with a car in the southbound lanes of I-81 near Hagerstown on Saturday afternoon. Police say Payne had been heading north before he turned into the southbound lanes near the West Virginia line. He then continued northbound in the southbound lanes for more than 2 miles before colliding with a car.
The children, an 8-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy, were airlifted to a hospital in Washington after the crash.
The driver and passenger in the second car were also injured and taken to hospitals.
