Dunbar Assistant Principal Shelton Stanley Found Shot, Killed Inside Pikesville Home, Baltimore County Police Say
PIKESVILLE, Md. (WJZ) -- Baltimore County Police are investigating the death of a Baltimore City high school assistant principal who they say officers found shot and killed in his Pikesville home over the weekend.
Officers found Shelton Justin Stanley, 36, dead inside his home in the 4800 block of Hawksbury Road on Sunday evening after family members called for a welfare check.
Stanley's body had traumatic injuries, police said. An autopsy conducted on Monday ruled his death a homicide due to multiple gunshot wounds.
"Our information was that the person had contact with family members on Saturday and was supposed to have contact on Sunday," Jennifer Peach, of the Baltimore County Police Department, said. "But on Sunday, they were not able to get ahold of that person."
Stanley was an assistant principal at Dunbar High School in east Baltimore.
"It's still early on in this investigation, but we don't believe this was a random act," Peach said. "There isn't anything that stands right away to tell us this was a break-in or robbery in progress."
Neighbors were left in shock. They said their community is typically safe and quiet.
"We've never had anything like that," Stephanie Morrow, a Pikesville resident, said. "So that's very scary."
An outpour of love and sympathy was shared on Facebook.
One message thanked Stanley for, "being an exceptional serviceman to so many youths across Baltimore."
Baltimore City Schools released the following statement:
"City Schools mourns the loss of Shelton Stanley. He has served Dunbar High School and the entire school community well and he will be missed greatly. We extend our condolences to his family, loved ones, and all those whose lives he has impacted."
A candlelight vigil will be held for Stanley on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in front of Friendship Academy of Science and Tech.
