Man Dies After Losing Consciousness In Custody
ODENTON, Md. (AP) -- Anne Arundel County police are investigating the death of a man who lost consciousness while under restraint in the back of a police car.
Police say Patrick Toney, 41, of Odenton died at a hospital Wednesday.
He was taken into custody last Friday for a mental health evaluation after officers saw him behaving erratically while his
SUV was stopped in a roadway. Police say officers restrained Toney after he spat at them and flailed his legs. Police also say he tried to kick out the windows and glass partition of the patrol vehicle.
He lost consciousness and stopped breathing on the way to the hospital. Medical staffers were able to revive him, but he died five days later. His body was taken to the state medical examiner for an autopsy.
