Man Convicted Again In 1975 Slaying Gets Life
EASTON, Md. (AP) -- A man convicted again in the slaying of a Hagerstown police officer in 1975 has been sentenced to life in prison a second time.
The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports that a Talbot County Circuit Court judge sentenced Merle Unger Jr., 63, on Monday. Unger's first trial had been moved from Washington County, where this year's retrial was conducted.
Unger killed Donald Kline in a shootout after the off-duty officer interrupted a grocery store holdup in December 1975.
The Maryland Court of Appeals granted Unger a new trial last year because the judge in his original trial gave improper jury instructions.
