Construction Along I-95 Will Cause Major Delays
BALTIMORE (WJZ)--The Maryland Transportation Authority announced the return of construction along the mainline of I-95 which is expected to cause major traffics delays and congestion in downtown Baltimore.
Pat Warren explains what the transportation authority has planned.
The plan will cause major gridlock starting Sunday and continuing through the summer and fall.
The announcement comes just as the Federal Highway Administration declares March 23 through the 30th National Work Zone Awareness Week.
"I don't know to put it any better than simply, it's going to be a mess," said Pete Rahn, Maryland Transportation Secretary.
On Sunday all lanes of I-95 northbound will shift to the right between Caton Avenue and Russell Street and stay that way for about 6 weeks.
On Saturday the 28th southbound 95 traffic lanes will split after the Fort McHenry tunnel with two lanes on the right and two lanes on the left. That should last 8 weeks.
Then on March 30th the northbound lanes will split with three lanes to the left and one lane to the right between Hanover Street and Key Highway and that's just the beginning.
"It's going to be a mess for the entire summer. This work should be done by the end of October if we're fortunate," said Rahn.
205,000 vehicles travel this stretch of road each day and anyone who chooses not to find another way has to ask themselves, are you feeling lucky?
The work will cover four and a half miles of the interstate.
The $64-million project is paid for with money collected from bridge and highway tolls.
