In Profanity-Laced Rant, Machado Says He's 'Lost Respect' For The Red Sox
BALTIMORE (WJZ/AP) -- One, two, three strikes you're out of Manny Machado's good graces.
The crowd at Fenway Park gave Adam Jones a standing ovation after the player experienced racist taunts in Boston the night before, but the team's feud with Manny Machado lived on.
Chris Sale was back on the mound and as Orioles third baseman Manny Machado stepped to the plate, Sale threw a pitch behind his legs.
Machado's response was to homer out of Fenway Park for the second straight night, connecting off Sale in the seventh.
Still, the Sox ended up winning 5-2.
Emotions have been elevated since Machado injured Red Sox star Dustin Pedroia on a slide April 21 in Baltimore. Pedroia missed the next three games. Two days after the slide, Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes threw a fastball behind Machado's head and was suspended. Baltimore's Dylan Bundy hit Mookie Betts near the left hip with a fastball in Monday's series opener, drawing boos.
After Sale threw behind Machado Tuesday night, plate umpire D.J. Reyburn immediately issued a warning to both teams. Orioles manager Buck Showalter came out for a lengthy discussion with Reyburn, Boston manager John Farrell remained in his dugout.
In post-game interviews, Machado unleashed his fury, and Sale remained unapologetic.
"I lost my respect for that organization, Boston and how they're handling that whole situation," Machado said in an expletive-filled rant.
"If they're going to hit me, hit me. Go ahead. Get it over with. Don't keep lingering it around and doing that. I've lost mad respect for that team and that organization," he said.
"That's stuff that you don't f***ing do," he said. "They're still thinking about that same slide that I did that was no intention on hurting anybody and I'm still paying, I'm still trying to get hit at. Get thrown at my f***ing head, get f***ing thrown at everywhere. It's f***ing bulls**t, you know, I've lost my respect for that organization, for that coaching staff, for everyone over there... We should do something about pitchers out there with f***ing balls in their hands throwing 100 miles per hour trying to hit people. I got a f***ing bat, too, I could go up there and crush somebody if I wanted to, but you know what? I'll get suspended for a year and the pitchers only get suspended for two games... That's not cool."
Told about Machado's tirade, Sale shrugged it off.
"Whatever, man. I'm not losing sleep tonight," Sale said.
Sale wasn't interested in a back-and-forth with Machado.
"That's part of it," Sale said. "I can't speak on what he says. I don't know what he said. I'm not too worried about it, either."
