Luck Is In The Air! Glen Burnie Man Latest Md. Lottery Big Winner
GLEN BURNIE, Md. (WJZ)—A Glen Burnie man is a million dollars richer after winning Saturday's Powerball. It's the fourth major lottery win in Maryland this year.
Rochelle Ritchie has more on what is behind all of the wins.
It could only be lady luck. The million dollar winner came forward Monday to claim his winnings. But there are still winners out there, with as much as $76 million on the table waiting to be claimed.
Maryland Lottery is on fire, with four Mega Millions wins and three Powerball wins already this year!
"A large number this year of what we call second-tier winners, which in both these Mega Millions and Powerball games, that's when people are getting the first five numbers. They are not getting the last number or the Mega Ball or Powerball, but that is still a million dollars," said Stephen Martino, Maryland Lottery.
The owner of JJ's Tavern sold the most recent million dollar Powerball ticket to a frequent customer just this weekend.
"Really excited. He is really generous. He bought the whole bar a round of drinks. He is just a happy-go-lucky guy," said Joyce Clarke.
The 68-year-old man wants to remain anonymous but is certainly the talk of the tavern.
"That much money would benefit anybody greatly. He is a really nice, friendly guy. He's generous. I am sure everything will be fine for him and his friends," said Larry Propel.
Changes were made to the Mega Millions Lottery, which made the odds to win 254 million to one. But Marylanders seem to be doing better than before.
In Charles County, a Mega Millions jackpot ticket worth more than $400 million was sold at Lady Liquors. No one has come forward to claim last week's Mega Millions jackpot worth $414 million. If they take the cash option of $230 million, after they pay Uncle Sam, they are left with $76.4 million.
"You could do a lot with that," one woman said.
The director of Maryland Lottery says checking the numbers is just as crucial as playing to win.
"Really important to check the numbers. If you've got a few, you've probably won a few bucks. We pay out a lot of money in those lower- tier prizes," Martino said.
And Maryland has had two of the highest jackpot wins ever.
Winners have 182 days from the day of the drawing to turn in their ticket.
The winner of the $414 million jackpot will split that with another winner in Florida who has not come forward either.
