Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown Announces Passing Of His Father
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- Sad news for Maryland's Lieutenant Governor.
Anthony Brown announced Thursday the passing of his father, Dr. Roy H. Brown, at the age of 89.
Over the last four months, he battled cancer.
Lt. Gov. Brown released a statement, saying:
"My father was a man who led by example. He rose out of poverty in Kingston, Jamaica and overcame incredible odds to become a doctor. As a loving husband and father, he worked tirelessly to provide every opportunity for his children. As a family physician, he donated his services to countless people in need of care. He always put others first. That is the essence of who my father was and how he lived his life.
"My father taught each of us that it is our responsibility in life to serve our community; to help others before helping ourselves. I can't think of a greater legacy than the lessons of commitment to family and service to the community that he instilled in me.
"I love him very much and I commit myself to a life that will honor his memory."
Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Doug Gansler offered his condolences:
"I would like to express my condolences to Lt. Governor Anthony Brown at the passing of his father. As a son and the father of two boys, I know just how important the father/son relationship is, and my heart goes out to him and his entire family."
The loss comes as Anthony Brown looks to succeed Martin O'Malley as the next governor of Maryland.
