Love Is In the Air: Baltimore Rated Second Best City For Singles
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Charm City just got more charming this Valentine's Day.
Christie Ileto explains how a national publication ranks Baltimore as one of the best spots for singles.
Whether it's flowers, bling or gifts for your sweetheart's sweet tooth, Baltimore's single love birds know love is in the air.
"I was reminded by girlfriend a few times," said James Mahon.
Financial forecaster, Kiplinger, just rated Baltimore as the second best city for singles.
And this Valentine's Day, single men are expected to dig deeper into their wallets, spending twice as much as those who are married.
"These are for my wife and my 5-year-old daughter whose favorite color is yellow," said Tag Zentz, holding up two bouquets of flowers.
Zentz speaks the language of love this holiday.
"I do come to the store here every year on Valentine's Day," he said.
At O'Donnell Florists, it's been non-stop.
"We see a lovely increase in demand," said Susan Hall.
While love birds, especially those flying solo, shell out for the holiday, businesses are cashing in.
'It's the largest money making day of the year," one businesswoman said.
This year, the holiday will generate $18.6 billion.
The National Retail Federation says the average person will spend about $131. That's up from 2010.
While flowers, chocolates, even a night out are common Valentine's Day presents, the most popular is a card.
"Nothing crazy," said Mahon.
Mahon is keeping his role as cupid, simple. Along with flowers for his sweetheart, "I got some pillows at IKEA, a picture frame."
Because every love bird knows, it's not about how much you spend, but the thought behind it to keep your sweetheart happy.
Studies show men will open their wallets twice as much as women on this holiday.
