Local Bridal Shop Up in Flames in Fells Point

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore Firefighters working Sunday night on a 2-alarm fire that tore through a Fells Point bridal shop.

It happened at the 1700 block of Eastern Avenue.

When crews arrived at 8:00 p.m. they found heavy fire and smoke coming from the the second and third floors at the rear of Bridal Fashions by Niko.

Firefighters tell WJZ people in Fells Point noticed the smoke and fire coming from the building roof and called 9-1-1.

Three trucks, with nearly 75 firefighters were able to get into the building, but due to unsafe fire conditions the building was evacuated. Crews continued to fight the fire from outside the building.

A crowd gathered to watch the scene as thick smoke pushed west on Eastern Avenue. Fire officials say the smoke was largely because of what was burning inside the building.

"It was a bridal store with different clothing fabrics, so once that fire got in with the fabrics and the materials in the building, all that stuff started to mix together and created unsafe conditions as far as smoke and toxins for our members so we got them out of the building in interest of public safety," said Sam Johnson with Baltimore City Fire.

No one was inside the building at the time of fire. No individuals or firefighters have been reported injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
