Liberian Shipping Company Fined In Pollution Case

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Federal prosecutors say a Liberian-registered shipping company was ordered by a Baltimore judge to pay $2.4 million for falsifying records about oil waste from a ship.

Prosecutors say Cardiff Marine Inc. was fined Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Marvin J. Garbis, who also ordered the company to serve three years probation and participate in an environmental compliance plan that includes independent third-party auditing.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for Maryland said the investigation began after a crew member on the M/V Capitola told a visiting clergy member about the dumping of waste oil using a pipe to bypass pollution prevention equipment.
