Len Elmore Remembers The Life Of Darryl Dawkins
Len Elmore is a former Maryland Terrapin and NBA player who is now a sports broadcaster.
Len joined Ed and Steve to remember the life of Darryl "Chocolate Thunder" Dawkins, a good friend of Len's.
Steve asked Len what he remembered most about playing against Darryl Dawkins. Len acknowledged his athleticism and dunking ability stood out, "I considered him a man child. He was built like no other, strong and explosive. I always used to tell him 'your a great shooter,' to try to keep he outside of the paint."
Ed asked Len whether opposing players disliked Dawkins breaking so many rims when dunking the basketball during his career. Len said that most players were in awe watching him break rims saying, "I don't think anyone got ticked off about it. We marveled at it, until they adopted the breakaway rims, we wouldn't contest his dunks. We would make sure we covered our heads."
Len went on to discuss how Darryl Dawkins made the game fun because of his great personality, the impact of not playing college basketball on Dawkins' professional career, how he would have fit into today's NBA, and the expectations for the Maryland Terps men's basketball team this season.
